2200 - Rope & Splicing for Entertainment - Live Webinar Training, Saturdays, Nov 14, 21, Dec 5, 12 1-3pm PST

Join us for a special online course where you will learn about splicing and the different ropes used in entertainment.  We will examine rope construction and the types of fibers that impact our choices when selecting rope for use in the field  For the splicing portion of the class, you will follow along at home as we splice 12 strand and double braid rope.  This will be a fun class with an incredibly experienced and knowledgeable instructor.

Students will be required to own or purchase the tools and rope required for the class. This could be up to a $75 investment in materials. A supplies list will be provided. EPS will be able to provide some of the materials for a fee.

Course Description

Week 1, Saturday Nov 14
Learn in detail about rope construction, lay, materials and types.  Extensively explore, rope properties, uses and applications in entertainment.

Week 2, Saturday Nov 21
Dive into splicing tools and techniques for different strand ropes, double braid and more.  Review the types of tools used and their history including proper terms and definitions.  Also, learn some new knots!

Week 3, Saturday Dec 5
Follow along with Andy as we jump into basic splicing including straight bury and brummel splices.

Week 4, Saturday Dec 12
We complete the course with putting it all together and learning a double braid polyester eye splice.

Andy Schmitz is a circus rigger with over 25 years of entertainment industry experience as a Project Manager, Head Rigger, Technical Director, Lighting Director, and Production Manager. Andy worked his way up to Head of Rigging on Cirque du Soleil’s Koozawhile touring over 20 cities on three continents before he moved back to Vegas to start a family. Andy has rigged with Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and served as the Assistant Head of Rigging at “Le Reve.” Prior to his circus career, Andy was a freelance Technical Director based in Philadelphia, where he had the pleasure of acting as Technical Director for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, worked with the team at Sapsis Rigging, and was the Production Manager for Rennie Harris Puremovement’s Bessie award-winning hip-hop ballet, Rome & Jewels. Andy is a proud member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers who can tye well over 100 knots from memory (and counting!)
